During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss the pros and cons of the various options available to you to make sure you fully understand the implications of the option you are considering. Careful consideration is necessary to choose which type of breast implant is right for you. Your personal preferences, breast anatomy, body type and your desired increase in size will determine the choice of breast implant to be used for your breast augmentation surgery. Your goals and lifestyle, and your plastic surgeon's recommendations and his surgical judgment are also factors to consider.
A variety of breast implants are available with the following options to consider:
Implant Filler
Breast implants can be either be filled with silicone gel or saline (sterile salt water). The advantage of saline breast implants is that, if ruptured, the saline (salt solution) is dissolved by the body. A disadvantage is that saline implants may appear and feel less natural, especially in small-breasted or reconstructive patients.Silicone gel-filled implants provide a more natural feel than saline implants. Studies show that silicone implants are safe and do not cause connective tissue diseases and certain autoimmune diseases. In November 2006 the FDA lifted restrictions and approved the use of silicone breast implants for women who are at least 22 years old. Many surgeons in the United States have very little or no silicone-implant experience because of the former FDA restrictions on silicone implants, which were in effect for fourteen years.
Breast implant size refers to the volume of the saline or silicone, typically ranging from 120 to 850 cc. It also refers to the diameter or the width of the implant measured across it's base (the side of the implant that will be positioned over the chest wall). More about determining what size is right for you
The texture of the breast implant is another option to consider. Breast implants can either have a smooth or textured outer shell. Whether the implant is filled with saline or silicone, breast implants have a solid silicone, rubber shell. Typically the shell is made of a single layer, but some implants have a double layer.
Breast implants come in either round or anatomical/ contoured shapes. Anatomical implants are shaped like a teardrop, while round implants are shaped like a sphere. Round implants allow the implant to rotate and move within the breast pocket after the surgery. Anatomical implants require a more precise pocket to be formed so that there is no rotation.
Breast implants also come in a variety of profiles. This refers to how far the implant protrudes. The implant may have a low, medium or high projection (depending on the depth of the implant from the base to the highest point of the implant curve).
Most of the breast implants available in the Philippines come from 4 countries: China, the Netherlands, France, and Ireland. The cheapest silicone gel implants come from China. These implants have been chosen by many patients who have limited budgets. In the middle of the price range are the cohesive-gel implants made by the McGhan corporation in Ireland, Mentor Corporation in the Netherlands and another European company, the Eurosilicone company from France. The latest development in implants is the anatomical cohesive-gel implants with multi-layered silicone shells, made by McGhan and Mentor.
