Risks of Breast Augmentation Surgery
All
surgery has some uncertainty and risk involved but complications are infrequent
and usually minor when breast augmentation is performed by a qualified plastic
surgeon, since he has the necessary training, skill and experience. If you
follow your surgeon's instructions closely both before and after surgery,
you can also reduce your risks of complications such as infections, bleeding
and drug reactions.
There are also specific complications associated with this procedure which you should be aware of. The most common problem is capsular contracture. This occurs if the scar or capsule around the implant begins to tighten. This squeezing of the soft implant can cause the breast to feel hard. Capsular contracture sometimes requires partial or complete excision of the scar tissue, or removal or replacement of the implant.
Infection is also a possibility in any surgical procedure. In breast augmentation, a small percentage of patients develop an infection around the implant. Sometimes, the implant may have to be removed until the infection clears. Only then can a new implant be inserted. There are also cases wherein excessive bleeding following the procedure causes swelling and pain. Another operation may be needed if excessive bleeding continues.
Some women have experienced numbness and oversensitivity in the nipple area or near the incisions. While these symptoms usually disappear in time, unfortunately, in some patients, they may be permanent.
At times, breast implants may break or leak. If a saline implant breaks, salt water will be harmlessly absorbed by the body. However, if it is a silicone gel implant, the silicone gel may move into surrounding tissue. This may require a second operation and replacement of the leaking implant.
Another factor to consider is that while there is no evidence that breast implants cause breast cancer, it is more difficult to get a reliable x-ray of a breast with an implant. Additional views and ultrasound examinations may be required to detect breast lumps or to evaluate the implant.
While there are various possible complications which may arise when you undergo breast augmentation, most women have no problems and do not experience these complications. However, it is still best to discuss these complications with your physician to make sure you understand the risks and consequences of breast augmentation.
